Sommelo is an international music festival arranged in Kainuu, Finland and Russian Karelia, which are the cradle of most runo singing and other forms of old and new folk music. The event incorporates concerts, courses, conferences, art exhibitions and other attractions for the whole family.
A unique event providing the coolest folk music in an openly experimental style that draws on tradition and respects the folk heritage. The biggest winter happening in the world of folk music and dance will kick off the Finnish festival year. Folklandia is backed by the main organisations, events and educational institutions in the field of folk music and dance.
This urban celebration is a living part of Finland’s national cultural heritage that brings nostalgia to the fore. Organised in a museum setting, the festival has accommodated fresh and traditional perspectives on the Finnish Midsummer holiday since as far back as 1954.
Our 48th Spelit folk music event will be organised on the premises of South Ostrobothnia Folk High School (including venues and accommodation services) and in the scenic natural surroundings of Ilmajoki, featuring more than 20 concerts of folk music, dance and singing, dozens of smaller musical events and performances, the Finnish championships for harmonica and mandolin players, and the Spelit competition for one and two-row accordions.
