Besides more traditional music events, Lohtaja Church Music Festival will provide pop-up concerts, community singing and other social occasions. This festival will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2018.
Invigorating chamber music, philosophical debate and academic enquiry will come together at this fascinating festival amidst the autumnal ambience of an idyllic garden city within the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, with a wide range of workshops and some unprecedented surprises.
The maritime ambience of Inkoo and its mediaeval church will breathe new life into familiar and less well-known works of chamber music. The highlights of this annual celebration are international guest stars, a concert for children, a concert at the Wallhalla Theatre in Barösund, and the Jazz in the Square free concert. The Artistic Director of Music by the Sea is the violinist Nonna Knuuttila.
This annual specialised event provides numerous opportunities to hear Finnish and international organists, orchestras and choirs, with the organ serving as an instrument of several musical genres over the festival week. Since its very inception in 1973 Lahti Organ Festival has also featured films, circus, dance and various experimental art forms in the organ music programme.
The unique historical milieu of the old parish church of St Lawrence provides the heart of this superb musical experience, which gives pride of place to baroque music and period instruments while also accommodating musical works from other eras. Leading artists will place special emphasis on works not previously heard in Finland.
